Isabel Marant’s Bekket sneakers – the kick to launch a thousand kicks

This is the bit where all lovers of fashion (us) get to laugh openly in the faces of those who don’t (them). You, a possessor of taste, can stop them in the midst of their eye rolling, snickering, “Why would you wear THAT, how impractical!” lectures with a swift kick in the face. Or kicks to the face* - because thanks in large part to one Isabel Marant, and in another part to the carousel of never-ending nineties nostalgia that fashion has been riding for the past year or two: sneakers are back with a vengeance. And nothing, aside from tracksuits on a Sunday, are more comfortable than sneakers.Isabel Marant reignited it all a couple of seasons back: a sneaker with a hidden, inbuilt wedge; the design a beautiful fusion of fat basketballer hightops and sports luxe – it’s the shoe that ignited a million copies and put sneaks back on the feet of everyone from models to fashion editors.

Naturally, I’ve taken care of you with a little dose of sneaker for most occasions – Nine West’s Sonni is a sparkling bridge between sneaker and dress flat – the sort of shoe you could slip on with a pair of black skinny trousers and a half tucked blouse poking from the top of a fitted knit. The Cheka’s a bit more on the grunge side, that sort of good-dirty canvas sneaker you can chuck on with your outfit that’s essentially a shredded homage to Courtney Love. And lastly, Sportsgirl’s Bree (in plum, because why not?) is a nice exercise in pop colour and contrast detail – the sort that would work with Miranda Kerr’s little casual chic look up there – pop them on when you’re sick to death of your ballet flats and want to street up your weekend wear.
